The Raft of the Medusa,1818-1819

席里柯生于法国鲁昂，幼年随全家迁往巴黎，1808年从画马名家韦尔内学画。1810年入盖兰画室，与德拉克洛瓦相识，常去卢浮宫临摹古代大师的名作。学生时代席里柯就表现出不肯循规蹈矩地遵从古典原则的气概，被他保守的老师所排斥，认为他学画没有什么前途，最好改行。以后席里柯去意大利学习，惊叹米开朗基罗的创造力，成为这位大师的崇拜者。

席里柯有志于创新，注重个人情感的表达，在作品中往往流露出米开朗基罗般的宏伟感和运动感。席里柯常从现实生活中获取灵感，描绘他一生热爱和熟悉的马匹和骑手，绘制大量速写然后进行创作。席里柯的第一幅参加沙龙展的作品《冲锋的骑兵军官》，表现了战火纷飞的战场上一位挥刀驰骋的指挥官，荣获金奖。席里柯还创作了取材于当代事件的不朽巨作《梅杜萨之筏》。席里柯的作品曾去英国展出，得到很高的评价。

席里柯一生与马紧密相连，他自幼崇拜驯马，以后又绘制了多幅关于马的作品，如《狮攫马》、《埃布松赛马》（1821年）等，席里柯画马的习作多达上千幅，最后因坠马受伤身亡，年仅33岁。
