The Raft of the Medusa,1818-1819
席里柯生于法国鲁昂,幼年随全家迁往巴黎,1808年从画马名家韦尔内学画。1810年入盖兰画室,与德拉克洛瓦相识,常去卢浮宫临摹古代大师的名作。学生时代席里柯就表现出不肯循规蹈矩地遵从古典原则的气概,被他保守的老师所排斥,认为他学画没有什么前途,最好改行。以后席里柯去意大利学习,惊叹米开朗基罗的创造力,成为这位大师的崇拜者。

席里柯有志于创新,注重个人情感的表达,在作品中往往流露出米开朗基罗般的宏伟感和运动感。席里柯常从现实生活中获取灵感,描绘他一生热爱和熟悉的马匹和骑手,绘制大量速写然后进行创作。席里柯的第一幅参加沙龙展的作品《冲锋的骑兵军官》,表现了战火纷飞的战场上一位挥刀驰骋的指挥官,荣获金奖。席里柯还创作了取材于当代事件的不朽巨作《梅杜萨之筏》。席里柯的作品曾去英国展出,得到很高的评价。

席里柯一生与马紧密相连,他自幼崇拜驯马,以后又绘制了多幅关于马的作品,如《狮攫马》、《埃布松赛马》(1821年)等,席里柯画马的习作多达上千幅,最后因坠马受伤身亡,年仅33岁。
