描绘高更理想中的伊甸园，在神秘氛围中，由生到死的过程依次展开。这是画家以最大热情完成的哲理性作品。

各自走上自己独立的人生和艺术道路

他把绘画的本质看作是

某种独立于自然之外的东西

当成记忆中经验的一种创造

他说：绘画跟现实没关系，绘画根本不需要费力的还原真实世界。

高更找到了一种新的绘画方法，在二维的画布上，用几乎平涂颜色画出空间感。

高更的作品趋向于“原始”的风格。

其用色和线条都较为粗犷。

高更的作品中往往充满具象征性的物与人。

《我们朝拜玛丽亚》

是他在创作《我们从哪里来？我们是谁？我们往哪里去？》前的构思性作品。在野外采摘水果的大溪地妇女，常举行神秘祈神活动。在阳光的照射下呈现出一种原始的神性。背景色彩斑驳绚丽，没有透视感，色彩、形体都是平面的和富有装饰性的。它神秘，就在于收入画中的形象是一种综合的暗示。

英国作家毛姆曾以高更的经历为蓝本
