SPEECH TO HONDER UNIVERSITY FRESHMEN –SEPT 2016

Thank you Mr Chairman for the honour and the opportunity to address the new Honder University students on this important day as they start one of the most critical parts of their education.

What you will learn at Honder in the next few years will equip you to be a success in life, I am sure. However, it is up to you to make the most of your time at the University.

"Why a football club and a university?" some people might ask. For me, it is an obvious, natural cooperation at the right time. In England we recognise that sport is another form of education. In 19th century Britain it was understood that team sports gave not only the benefits of discipline and physical fitness but also of teamwork. Benefits of people working together to achieve a common goal. Collaboration, co-operation.

On Tuesday I had the privilege of being present for your parade as you finished your military service. From that training you will have learned the benefits of discipline and working together as a unit, in much the same way as you do in sport and a team sport in particular.

Tranmere Rovers Football Club was formed in 1884 at a time when Victorian Britain was developing into a world power, and at the time that team sports were becoming an essential part of the educational curriculum in the country.

The Victorian Britons recognised, just as your Premier has, that such team sports can help to develop the culture and the citizens, the people that make up that culture. Football is the team sport that has captured the planet.

As a result of this, football has become part of the fabric of UK culture - every City, town and village has its own club and usually more than one. I think we are at the dawn of a similar period here in China as the country has emerged as a global economic and political power.

The vision of your Premier to become a world football power at the same time will change the lives of many for the better.

Wherever I went in the world as Chief Executive of The FA, the world's first national football association, I found that football is not only a key educational tool that builds culture, it is a common language that transcends nations and continents. If you can't speak English, French or Chinese, we can all speak football.

It breaks down barriers between nations and people and it is appropriate that as China becomes a global power it also takes its place in the global game of football. The time has come for China to be at the top table for football.

And so a cooperation between a Chinese educational establishment and one of the oldest English football clubs seems the right thing to do, at the right time."

Whilst I am English I am also Greek! My father instilled in me the need for education, something that I have carried with me all of my life. I was lucky enough to become a professional footballer but I did not do what everyone else did and leave school at 16.

I continued at school and went to Manchester University to study Psychology whilst playing as a professional footballer. This was something people did not do.

The Psychology degree has been a big influence in what and how I have done things over my whole life. I continued my studies after University and became a Chartered Accountant and still continued playing football. I played with professional clubs for 17 years.

This was only possible if you adopted a disciplined life. Something you will have learnt already from your military service which you should take with you into your studies.

For me, there are only two resources in a business: people and finance. So psychology and accountancy were a more useful combination than you would think. Together they enabled me to become the UK and European leader for business regeneration for PWC and to become the CEO of the FA (Sven G. Eriksson’s boss!).

Your education here at Honder will give you a framework on which you can hang your future experiences. It will help you to learn more quickly.

In my day, we had to learn and retain information but today information is easily available on the internet. So it is more important that you learn how to use that information. How to analyse, how to make decisions. I’m sure that Honder will give you those skills.

The use of information rather than the information is the more important aspect.Honder should and will give you a thirst to learn and if I can give you one piece of advice, it is when you leave Honder, remember what it taught you and keep learning.

From the age of 30, at the end of every year I have written down what things I have learnt in the year. Whenever I think I’ve not learnt much – I move on. I have changed my job.

At times here at Honder and in life afterwards things may not go well but remember it is not what happens to you but how you respond that matters. If you have a bad result that’s the time to go again to work harder.

On the dressing room door of our football club there is a sign:Blame no-one; expect nothing; do something.Above all avoid those self-limiting beliefs that whisper in your ear, especially at 3 o’clock in the morning. When Napolean (a great French leader) was asked what he wanted in his generals, he said, “A general that’s brave at 3 o’clock in the morning.”

I have seen in my life so many people who limit themselves because they think they can’t do something; it’s too hard; or they’re not good enough. But the most successful people are not put off by failure and try to stretch themselves to achieve and be the best that they can be.

By choosing Honder University you have taken a great step on the long march to being the best that you can be.

The University will undoubtedly play its part but you have to as well. You have to work hard. You have to go again if things don’t go as well as they should.

The English perception of China is that the people work hard and apply themselves more than the westerners do. I am sure that with the combination of that Chinese endeavour and the great institution that is Hinder University, you will succeed in not only fulfilling your potential but exceeding it.

Finally, can I thank the Chairman and all of the staff at Honder University for their hospitality and the opportunity to speak to you on this important day.

Can I also thank you for listening and wish you every success with your course and for the future.
