上海纽约大学2020届本科生毕业典礼致辞

President Hamilton, Chancellor Yu, Vice-Chancellor Lehman, respected faculty, distinguished guests, family members, friends, and the fellow members of the Class of 2020, welcome.

尊敬的Hamilton校长、俞校长、雷蒙校长、各位老师、来宾、家人、朋友，以及2020届毕业生们，大家好！

August 19th, 2016, we stepped into Jinqiao residence hall with our hands full of luggage and stomachs full of butterflies, not knowing what to expect in our upcoming college life,nor whom to meet in our new dorm room. The very next day Chancellor Yu told us we’re the fourth class of NYU Shanghai, the Class of 2020, the class that finally made this school complete. Sitting in our shiny purple auditorium, little did we know, we’re about to go through one of the most unforgettable experiences in our college life, GPS, in this very same room.

2016年8月19日，我们带着满身的行李和满腔的忐忑走进了金桥宿舍的大门，未来四年的大学生活和即将见面的陌生室友，都让人紧张又期待。第二天，在给我们的讲话中，俞校长说，我们是上海纽约大学的第四届学生，2020届，是让这个学校的学生群体终于完整起来的一届。坐在闪闪发光的紫色礼堂里，我们并不知道，接下来就在这同一间屋子，我们会迎来大学时代最难忘的经历之一，GPS 的课堂。

Like many other non-native English speakers among our fellow students, I was overwhelmed by the amount of academic reading coming our way every day, filled with phrases and concepts that I’ve never seen before in my life. “Stereotypes”, “alienation”, “privileges”, “assumptions”. But it wasby paddling through this river of new pieces of knowledge, that we began to ask important questions like “What is ‘one’ and ‘other’?” “What costs are we paying for the development of metropolitan cities?” “What’s the truestory of globalization?” “What exactly is burning in Paris?”

像许多非英语母语的同学们一样，一开学就像潮水般涌来的学术文章让我有些无所适从。这些艰涩严肃的文字里，包含了许多我从未见过的概念和词汇。“刻板印象”“异化疏远”“特权”“假设”。但是，正是经过了这样的新知识浪潮的洗礼，我们才渐渐能够问出许多对这个时代具有真正意义的问题：“‘个体’和‘他体’是什么？”“大都市的发展让我们付出了哪些代价？”“全球化的真实故事是怎样的？”“巴黎在燃烧，究竟燃烧的是什么？”

We oftenfind ourselves in conversations bringing two or more different worlds together. I have close friends whose cultural backgrounds are drastically different from mine. We talk, discuss, and even debate in classes and labs, on the slides outside of Jinqiao Dorm, or on balconies of our Manhattan Hall. We talk about topics fromself-identification, to the scenes in their first movie, to “could Wakanda really haveexisted?”, to "was this bubble tea here ordered before the COVID break or after?" Four years’ time has passed, our language skills went from no vocab, to 4000-word capstone papers. Moments anddialogues like these are likesparks on a grassland at dawn that lit up our undergraduate times.

我们经常会发现，自己处于跨山填海般的跨文化交流当中。我的许多亲近的朋友都来自各种鲜明而不同的文化背景。我们交流，讨论，乃至辩论，有时会在课堂和实验室里，有时在金桥宿舍外的滑梯上，抑或是曼哈顿夜色里的阳台上。我们的话题，有自我认同的迷茫和焦虑，有想象中自己第一部电影中的场景，也有“非洲大陆上是不是真的有可能诞生瓦坎达？”甚至“这杯奶茶是在疫情前还是之后点的？”四年过去，我们的语言水平，也终于从“没有词汇量”，达到了四千字的学士学位论文。这些交谈都是一个一个闪光的时刻，在黎明的草原上燃起点点星火。

Dumbledore once said, “there will be moments when we have to choose fromwhat is easy towhat is right.”We’re atan era where positions are taken so easily, that we often forget the fundamental things that connect us as human beings; there are so manydivergences and disagreements, where it seems like everyone wants to talk, and no one wants to listen. And it was moments like those on the slides of Jinqiao that kept me believing - believing that we’re on a great journey to something extraordinary.

邓布利多曾经说过，“在一些时刻来临的时候，我们要从容易的道路和正确的道路中做出选择。”我们身处的时代，观点易得，阵营林立，广义而基本的利益极易被嘈杂掩埋；差异与争论处处皆有，似乎人人都想说话，却没人愿意聆听。正是那些一个个在金桥的滑梯上闪闪发光的时刻，让我坚信，我们走在一条正确又可贵的道路上。

As students of NYU Shanghai, we are, in a sense, among the luckiest of our generation, to become part of this unprecedented educational experiment; where the torch that has been standing for “ethics, learning, equity, diversity, and inclusion” since 1831, is now also burning under the Oriental Pearl Tower for a more deeply and widely connected future world.

作为上海纽约大学的学生，从某种意义而言，我们是最幸运的一群人，能够有机会参与这样一次对教育的开拓与探索；能够见证在过去189年中都为道德、求索、平等、多元与包容而燃烧的紫色火炬，在东方明珠脚下也为一个更紧密相连的未来世界而亮起。

The Chinese writer Lu Xun, wrote in 1938 a line that I think well embodies our founding spirit. “Endless distances, countless people, they’re all related to me.”

1938 年，鲁迅曾在文章中写过一句话，我认为，恰如其分地体现了我们的核心精神。“无穷的远方，无数的人们，都与我有关。”

As children of NYU Shanghai, we’re not only cultivated as globally-mindedscholars, but also ascitizensofthisnewera, where weunderstandthe desire, love and duty that connects us all as human beings.

作为上纽学子，我们不仅是具有全球视野的求学者，更应当理解那些将我们作为人类紧紧相连的爱，希望，责任，成为这个新时代下，心性坚定，思想深刻，理性求索的人类社会一员。

Fellow members of the Class of 2020, I have the deepest respect and most genuine faith in you and us, that we will keep on growing as a global community of life-long scholars contributing back to our global society. We will be like a forest, with our roots growing deep into the soil, and our branches reaching higher for the sky. Collectively we will hold together the seven continents while embracing a bright future.

2020届的毕业生们，作为同学，我对各位同侪抱有最深切的信任与期许。相信我们会作为一个多元包容的全球化社群，持续求知并回馈社会。我们会像一片森林，根系愈深入厚实的土壤，枝丫愈伸向高远的天空，登攀不止，努力求索，回馈社会。我们的心会一直紧紧相连，连接七大洲，迎来锦绣可期的未来。
