First class of Aerospace Engineering graduates admitted to top graduate schools

The first class of students of the Aerospace Engineering programme at University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) are to earn their undergraduate degree this summer. According to statistics collected so far, among the 27 graduates who decided to pursue further studies, 14 received admission letters from world top ten universities in the field of aerospace engineering, including Nanyang Technological University and Imperial College London (ICL). Four of them, Yingxue Zhao, Dai Lin, Zekun Hu and Zheni Fei, shared their experiences.

To Zekun, who has received offers from ICL, University of London College, University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University, the most attractive feature of the UNNC course is its modular arrangement - which follows that of University of Nottingham UK – very progressive, inclusive and appealing. Alongside interesting classes, UNNC also organised regular visits to industrial plants such as a Boeing factory and flight academies.

“All the module conveners at our School are very patient, responsible, and willing to help,” said Zekun. Aside from their dedication, their diverse backgrounds were spoken highly of by all four students.

The teaching team includes former pilot with various aircraft qualifications, industry pioneer in the research of multi electric aircraft, prestigious scholar in the fields of fluid mechanics and aviation manufacturing. “This provided us with a broader perspective to see various possibilities in the future," Yingxue, who was admitted to ICL, added.

Influenced by her father, an aero-engine engineer, Yingxue was exciting to join UNNC to receive a British-style education and explore her favourite subject. “It was only after my exposure to aerospace that I appreciated the beauty of fluid mechanics and the joy of aerodynamics." Therefore, Yingxue chose to research in this area for her dissertation.

In Dai’s opinion, the most precious lesson he learned during his college life was not the knowledge of a single area but his comprehensive ability to research and think independently. “The goal of professors is always to guide and support us to explore and find an answer by ourselves. The learning ability cultivated during the process not only enables me to experience the process of scientific research, but also helps me to adapt to the future challenges," he said.

Dai believes that aerospace engineers help mankind explore the edge of the universe, and they improve people's lifestyles by developing technologies for safe and comfortable flights. He is also heading to ICL to pursue his dreams.

To Zheni Fei, who scored first for three consecutive years in the School and was awarded a national scholarship, UNNC has been a bridge to a future of unlimited potential. She represented the University in competition at the Global Grand Challenges Forum 2019 in her second year.

"The forum taught me that engineering is a very inclusive discipline and needs to be considered holistically – we need not only expertise of our own field, but also in other aspects such as sustainability and creativity," said Zheni. Through the University, she is currently doing an internship with the Royal Aeronautical Society, the world's only professional membership association dedicated to the aerospace and aviation industry.

The vast sky seems to have unlimited possibilities for the future of this fresh class of aerospace graduates.
