前 言
湖北油画在中国油画史上一直占有十分重要的位置。从上世纪20、30年代的武昌艺专开始,就直接得到中国最早的一批留法艺术家带回来的西方绘画真传。抗战期间,武昌艺专专迁到四川江津,与国立艺专、杭州艺专共同形成了中国绘画三足鼎立的局面。80年代,“湖北部落部落”作为青年美术思潮的先锋之一,他们对个体价值的追求,给中国美术界带来了新的挑战和新的文化景观,对于中国当代美术多元化及参与国际对话局面的形成,其影响是不可估量的。
今天,又20年过去了!艺术世界犹如凤凰涅槃,迸发出了更为鲜活和旺盛的生机,开辟了更为广阔的新天地。20年中,湖北油画家表现出楚人特有的执着与自信,他们一步一个脚印的走过了当代油画“新生代”、“近距离”、“新客观”、“玩世现实主义”、“陌生化图式”等实验性探索历程,进而开始转向了对艺术本身的追问。
本次参展的湖北油画家正是这一历程的践行者,他们大都亲历和见证了80、90年代中国油画的发展轨迹与波折。与仍然注重“当下性”的艺术家不同的是:他们不再把关注社会生存,强调对于人类命运和社会抉择心态的解读作为艺术家必须承担的主要责任;不再在乎表现什么,而是注重如何表现!尽管他们的作品中时时流露出东方本土精神文化的独特关照方式和人文情结,尽管他们的身份是学院的,但思想却是自在的、开放的、宽容的、甚至是另类的!正如利奥塔所说:他们“各自遵循着自己的游戏规则”,沉湎在形形色色之中的追逐、思考与嬉戏,自在自为,乐此忘返!
Foreword
Hubei has always been playing an important role in the history of national oil painting development. Early in the 1920s and the 1930s, there were returned artists, among the first batch of Chinese artists who studied in France, teaching oil painting at Wuchang Art School and introducing the western painting system. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, Wuchang Art School was relocated in Sichuang Province’s Jiangjin, standing together with Beiping Art School and Hangzhou Art School in the national art circle like the three legs of a tripod. In the 1980s, the so-called “The Hubei Tribe and Tribe”, as one of the pioneers leading the youth art movement with their pursuit of individual values, brought new challenges and a new cultural landscape to China’s art circle and was enormously influential in the diversification of contemporary Chinese art and its opening up to the international art circle.
In today’s China, twenty years after the 1980s, the art world has regained its full vitality and opened itself to a new world. As part of it, Hubei oil painters, in the past two decades, had undergone an experimental process in their exploration from “new generation”, “short-distance”, “neo-objective”, “cynical realism”, “unfamiliarized schema” before they turned to approach to art itself.
The Hubei oil painters participating in the present exhibition are among those experimental artists. More or less, they have witnessed the development of Chinese oil painting in the 1980s and 1990s and thus are different from those artists always focusing on “contemporariness” in that they no longer focus on how instead of what to express in their art works. Being orientally humanistic in their art works and being artists working in the art academies, they are open, tolerant, or even odd in their minds. They simply “conform to their own rules of the game”----in Jean-Francois Lyotard’s words, and devote themselves to their individual pursuit to art and enjoy it.
