Hope希望

I traveled to Chile, South America for my daughter's wedding on March 7. It was a wonderful experience and a lovely wedding.

I prepared a toast for my daughter and her husband. What came to mind was hope. Weddings are so much about hope and possibility. This brought about thoughts about one of my favorite poems by Emily Dickinson.

Emily Dickinson who lives from 1830 to1886 is thought to be one of the greatest American Poets. She lived much of her life as a "recluse" meaning that she rarely was seen in public, she never married, and she did not socialize much. Her great skills as a poet were unrecognized until after her death. Her sister discovered over 1800 poems that she had written across her life.

I thought the poem and the concept of hope is important for us right now with the virus. So much of our worlds have been completely and abruptly changed by the virus. And now, with the addition of schoolwork, your lives of students have undoubtedly gotten more challenging--- especially given that you cannot be with your peers to have conversations and support each other in the typical way that happens in college.

But hope is always there to guide you. From a mindfulness perspective we would think of hope as a way to recognize that challenges and the "storms" within you also contain a "song" of hope. Listen for the song of hope in your own mind when you take a moment to practice mindfulness. The hope maybe sometimes be quite difficult to recognize or accept given the strength of possibly upsetting thoughts. Hope is important for coping, hope is important for managing stress.

Here is the poem from Emily Dickinson. The title of this poem is “Hope is the thing with feathers" by Emily Dickinson. It begins,

“Hope” is the thing with feathers -

That perches in the soul -

And sings the tune without the words -

And never stops - at all -

And sweetest - inthe Gale -

is heard -

And sore must be the storm -

That could abash the little Bird

That kept so many warm -

I’ve heard it in the chillest land -

And on the strangest Sea -

Yet - never - in Extremity,

It asked a crumb - of me.

【Word Box】

1. Gale

我们说“The pigeons were happily pecking at crumbs of bread on the ground. 就可以用”crumbs of bread”。

This poem provides such meaning in the current time. The idea that hope doesn’t ask much from you or from me. Hope is the small voice that can be heard as the storm crushes around us. Hope will sing the song to enlighten you and guide you.

Listen for the hope, you will hear it, move towards the hope, and direct your actions in the direction of hope. Your small actions and the small steps you each take as individuals will move not only yourself, but humanity towards a hopeful outcome.
