The World is Impoverished by Sameness
(My Mother)
My love of Chinese clothes is in large part to my mom's influence on me growing up, my mom was a dress designer, once even designing clothes for the Ms. South Africa, she also designed and made all her own clothes. So when in October 2017 I travelled to the small city of Xitang and for the first time truly experienced Hanfu clothing and traditional Chinese culture I instantly fell in love with Chinese clothing and culture. (My attraction to China, came through my study of philosophy and psychology and the reading of Laozi, Confucius, Mencius, etc in university as well as my study of world economic systems and social structures...I prefer a shared society approach over individualism)
(Hanfu and Chinese CultureEvent in Kunshanin 2017)
This love of foreign culture also arose from my parents’ experiences, so whereas most South African wanted to travel to Europe or the USA, I chose Egypt, Peru, Jordan, Bolivia, India, etc as the first countries I wanted to travel to. The Old Seven Wonders and the long history and rich culture in these countries was from more attractive than Western Culture to me. It was during these travels that I would say "The world is impoverished by sameness" and"Internationalization/Globalization should not mean Westernization", when I travel I don’t want to go to a Starbucks to drink a coffee, but would rather go to a local cafe and sip rich Indian Masala Chai, Turkish coffee and Argentine Mate Tea and meet local friends.
As for a country's culture and history I firmly believe this should not only be seen a museum, but rather experienced in day to day life, a country's clothing (Hanfu, other Chinese clothing and Ethnic minority clothing)as carriers of this tradition and culture, should be lived and experienced and modern versions of traditional designs should be encouraged and embraced. However, one’s clothing also needs to fit the occasion and in business "mirror" your prospective clients clothing and meet your customers clothing and image expectations. (So for example New Oriental consultants and teachers clothing portrays a certain image that to a parent wanting to enroll students would convey professionalism; And in business meetings with Provincial and Corporate leaders the focus cannot be on your clothes but should rather be on the nature of your discussions)
(Used to TeachCourses in Chinese Clothing)
So up until last year March while I was teaching and designing leadership development courses for students and I would wear Chinese or minority clothing every day, but after being promoted into a leadership role in one of the largest private education groups in Yunnan I had to change what I wear to match the organization I now represented. So unfortunately, I recently have not had the opportunity to wear Hanfu or Yunnan minority clothing and attend cultural events, but this year it is my hope and plan that through the hosting of and the participation in Chinese cultural events I will be able to open my cupboard, pull out a beautiful set of clothes and let the world see the beauty of Chinese clothing and culture.
