China Talks public lecture series
At last week's China Talks session with David Goodman, we learnt that the Chinese translation of the phrase ‘China Town’, which describes the areas of Europe and America settled by Chinese immigrants, is ‘Tang Ren Jie’ or Tang People Street.
This is because it was during the Tang Dynasty that people from China began settling around the world and at that time they referred to themselves as ‘people of the Tang’, rather than as ‘Chinese’.
If you missed this fascinating talk, you can watch a video of it by clicking on ‘阅读原文’ at the bottom left of the page.
Don't forget, there's a whole series of China Talks events yet to come!
Check out Ying Miao talking about developments in China since the start of economic reforms and trade liberalisation in the 1980s. We’ll learn what significant social and political events took place that have shaped modern China.
